They might show how bad war is, but that doesn't make them anti-war movies. Why don't you go protest on the street and get off IMDB... and besides, the most graphic depiction of war would be Saving Private Ryan.
I look how you wanna look, I f_ck how you wanna f_ck.
I think you don`t understand the situation ?? i have absolutely nothing against the army (even not against your american Army).
But My question is to make a list of anti war movies and come on Do you think Full metal jacket is not against the army ??? well wy didn`t Kubrick got support from the american army with the use of their vehicles and stuff, like in other war movies. EXAMPLE: Black hawk down and many more !!!
i thot i should say to bartvanbethem that full metal jacket has nothing to do with the army. those are marines you dumb *beep*

I think you are the "twat". The poster was correctly pointing out the Full Metal Jacket has nothing to do with the Army. It has to do with the Marines.
And I agree with most people who know about war, who don't see these as anti war movies.
Thin read line is more about humanity and types generally. The war fighting aspects of it are allegorical and divorced from reality of it Full metal jacket is about.
Good Lord. Why don't you go flag-wave on the street and get off IMDB...
shareSaving Private Ryan an anti-war movie? Right, with the American flag waving in the beginning and at the end of the film... No, then you better put your nose to Catch-22 or The dirty dozen, movies that are not so 'patriotic minded'.
And if you really want to see a film which shows how ugly WWII was, you don't want to see a film about the Western, but about the Eastern front offcourse: 'Come and see',from Klimov. Resembles Cross of Iron a bit, but contains much more horror (in a psychological point of view).
This offcourse, besides movies about Vietnam or the Middle East, but for some reason, I don't even want to start talking about that.
Thank you - Seen "Come and see" many years ago and it really had an impression on me. I have been trying to think of the title. Such a change from usual Hollywood drivel!
shareSaving Private Ryan graphically depicts war only in the starting scene of the landing. The rest is Hollywood crap, as every military historian might tell you. The final battle between the besieged infantryman and the Germans with the Tiger tanks is as realistic as a Spiderman movie. When it comes to W.W.II, the only realistic movies are Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, but one has to see them both, possibly on the same day.

1. Three Kings
2. Tigerland
3. Black Hawk Down
4. Platoon
5. Tears of the Sun
[deleted]
Black Hawk Down and Tears of the Sun are not ANTI-WAR movies, they are just WAR Movies.
shareum after seeing those movies I am not exactly enthusiastic about going to war. Plus Black Hawk Down is very critical about how the USA screwed up.
sharethat doesnt make them anti war. it just shows what its like.
shareDon't forget Paths of Glory.

i hate Michael Moore and tylerdurdenisgod
both of you are sooooo angry
I don`t like Bush ... But i Hate Micheal Moore Just a little bit more !
Not because he is so Fat ... but because His movie don`t give a good view of reality and because he is way to much on the foreground giving his opinion !
I mean first hear all the stories from both sides and then give a final conclusion that is a good Documentary !
dude, a documentary is like an essay, its supposed to show one side of an issue, you think that "Super Size Me" showed both sides? In an english essay would you put down two sets of quotes, one that proved your point and one that challenged it? i think not.
share
Yeah Bosstone, your supposed to show your side but not make sh*t up about the other.
And don't forget that The Deer Hunter is an ANTI-WAR film too, just that it's much about that russian roulette too.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077416/
that movie probably shouldntve been that onesided...but if u look it as an persuasive essay... writing bad stuff about the other side is part of the writere's job
...btw...michael moore didnt make any of those stuff up....there are evidence supporting his accusations.
Anti war liberal propaganda
you should look up the definition of propaganda
and then ask me whos in charge in the united states.

yea...it shows its very bad....and showing something is bad is pretty much same as showing your against it... cuz if u like u wouldnt be showing its bad side...
shareBiggest Anti-War movie, "For King And Country"
I came so close to handing over my sandhurst place after watching that film, it was based an a true story, and made me sick to my stomach for a good week.
Every war film CAN be an anti-war film, band of brothers feels that way to me, you see real people dying, and think, what a waste of human life
After that, tigerland, definately, when boz says "why, why would i want to do that to another human being" says everything you need to say
Then thin red line, perhaps the greatest war film ever made

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.share
No, Black Hawk Down is very critical about how that lying, cheating, piece of complete *beep* Bill Clinton *beep* up, not the United States.
u dumb fuks all he asked was to list ur favorite anti war movie
shareHow the hell is BHD an Anti War movie?
shareI don’t have a list but if I did Das Boot would definitely be at number one.
sharei would have to go with the 1st list, but i never saw the last one, instead i would put 'Apocalypse Now'.
Black hawk down was definately not anti war because it really shows the soldiers as helping each other like brothers.
Saving prv ryan wouldnt really count either, brilliant film but it was more just a war film, true it shows gruesome reality of war etc but its more about action i think and helping each other.
My list would really boil down to:
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
Platoon
Thin Red Line
I'd have to disagree with your choice Apocolypse Now. Although the character Captain Willard does voice a strong opposition to the Vietnam War, the film itself, in my opinion, is not a political message for or against war. Willard's opinion is included to give the character depth. It's better for a character to say "I like the war" or "I hate the war" than it is to say "I'm in a war. I don't care either way". The soldier against his war, esspecially an elite member of SOG, further creates drama.
The film is an epic journey into the centre of the human mind and what exactly we consider "sane". It is set in the context of the Vietnam War to make the story work. It's simply a plot device, as it is based on a novel (Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad) written about an entirely different war in the 1800's.
And I disagree that Apocolypse Now is not an anti-war film. I really do feel it is.
And Apocolypse Now is only partially based on Heart Of Darkness.
He kinda kisses like an adolescent
Full Metal Jacket is anti-Army because it's about Marines.
:D
I would say, of those ive seen Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Three Kings are the most anti war movies ever done. Black Hawk Down ISNT a anti war movie... this movie just shows american was heroes and so good, and so on...
I have a thought that First Blood is a anti vietnam movie, someone agrees? It shows that the soldiers from Nam was treated like trash when they got home, and in First Blood 2 its a bit anti Nam too... that the americans only sent away Rambo couse for showing off... not for saving the priosoners.
Keep up the good work

First Blood is definetly anti-war.
Got to say though, nobody does anti-war like Kubrick: FMJ, Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove and even parts of Barry Lyndon if I remember correctly.
Oliver Stone has made some great anti-war films as well.
Apocolyspe Now is one of the best anti-war films even if it is a bit ridiculous and theatrical at times.
Three Kings and Tigerland are two extremely unrated anti-war films.

1. Windtalkers
2. We were Soldires
3. Stalingrad
4. Das Boot ( Dir. Cut )
5. Duell - Emeny at the Gates
Sorry - austria
How is Full Metal Jacket NOT an Anti-war movie?
And stop blaming everything on the liberals... are they causing all your problems?
I'm sorry but i will give you attention when you start attacking arguments and not a whole demographic of people
your all idiots..... The Deer Hunter... thats it... by farrr
shareBlack Hawk Down the movie was not critical of America's mistakes. Like was mentioned before it was a display of brotherly unity in Soldiers. It showed the last time an American has won a Medal of Honor (until the Iraq War, and SFC Smith).
The book, however, was very critical of the US, not the Army, but the Clinton Administration. Not for how the conflict was handled, but how the resolution was handled. Black Hawk Down was Clinton's first major "spit in the face" at the military. After they lost 18(?) men that day, he pulled them out of the conflict. To the military, they felt like those 18 men died for nothing, because they didn't even get to finish their job. Clinton's Secretary of Defense resigned over the issue in Somalia.
Hot shots part 1
and if you like part 2
top gun
navey seals
... only kiddin!
The most anti war film of all time has got to be
Casulties of war!

None of you mentioned
Johnny got his Gun
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067277/
I believe this is the most traumatic movie you can imagine. And as far as I know (but tell me if I'm wrong) it has been forbidden for several years in the USA and other countries.
"Johnny Got His Gun" is actually the book we see Bozz reading in the film. Few times we briefly see just the book cover. Great book! I haven't seen the film, though.

Paths Of Glory
A Very Long Engagement
Three Kings
Dr. Strangelove
Paths Of Glory was one of the 1st...
A Very Long Engagement is a beautiful story...
the rest mix humour... i like that....
anti-war movies that slap you in the head are good in the short term, but dont seem to "stick to the sides" as much (ie Deer Hunter)
most any Hollywood movie can be interpreted as anti-war on some level... (except those made with the purpose of propaganda in mind, and that hasnt happened much since WWII)
the fact that Saving Private Ryan shows the realities of war and how much that a generation sacrificed and went through defines anti-war... you are grateful to them for what the did, and at the same you would never wish it on them...
Honourable mention...
Full Metal Jacket (the irony of a female sniper is subtle yet powerful)
Platoon (what the hell were they doing there in the 1st place?)
Hamburger Hill (same)
The Thin Red Line (not te beat a dead horse, but)
Pearl Harbor (sorry... an anti-Ben Affleck movie... wrong board)
