This is going to become a modern Wizard of Oz

This is going to become a modern classic. I mean this is an amazing effort, and an amazingly made film. Acting is spot wonderful. The whole film is magical.

movie is crap

Yeah the movie is def an epic fail no way it will ever come close to the Wizard of Oz. Honestly you have to be pretty dumb to have thought that.

Not true. I think this movei is pretty good. Good cast, Jim Carrey may not be Oscar worthy in this is a fun and great performance for him. The effects are great, the costumes and magic are great, the twist on the plot is clever. It is a pretty magical modern film.

Besides, The Wizard of Oz was an epic fail back in the day. Lots of people did not like it, except children. You watch in 20 years or less this is really going to be a modern movie classic.

Oz has a 100% at RT. Grinch has a 53%, similar to recent releases like the Tron and Wall Street sequels.

No, it's not a classic or very good movie.

I don't think it'lll be a classic either but I'm going to guess The Wizard of Oz wouldn't have that rating had rotten tomatoes existed back in 1939 (if what the OP says is true).

I call movies that are considered 'bad' hated movies.

The Wizard of Oz is hailed by nearly everyone as a timeless classic. Its the kind of movie you never get tired of watching every year around the holidays.

The Grinch on the other hand, while amusing enough in its own way, is nowhere near as popular and had a number of boring or annoying parts. And it doesn't even come close to having the same amount of replay value.

I think it's a case of people believing classic is always better. The Woz is very much of it's time. I watched both films with my kids who hadn't read any film criticism or knew anything about Judy Garland and they much preferred the Grinch. The Woz is quite dark and strange really and I think it probably appeals more to a cross section of adults who prefer fairy tales to be a little bit gothic. Current remakes do go for a more fashionable, darker interpretation, for example, the Batman movies compared with the tv series from the 60's. The Grinch is a more warm hearted family film which probably doesn't appeal much to the average young poster on these boards. They are more likely either go the nostalgia route and perhaps champion the original made for tv short or they would be happier if the Grinch tore off Cindy's head, doused it in petrol and set fire to the whole town of Whoville.

LeeAnn Rimes. No it doesn't.

There's already been a modern Wizard of Oz. The Princess Bride.

No Day But Today. Today 4 U. One Song Glory.
How we gonna pay last year's RENT?!

reply

Since Princess Bride some filmmakers have REALLY tried to center Wizard as a modern day story, and last year it became a hit Disney film with Mila Kunis as an evil witch: "Oz: The Great & Powerful" (2013).

MAGIC=Sarah Silverman.

Despite claims it was similarly disliked when released in '39 THE WIZARD OF OZ was a Best Picture Oscar nominee the following year which basically means that it was highly regarded in some quarters already.

THE GRINCH, aside from Rick Baker's excellent Oscar winning makeup work on Carrey and Jim's committed performance itself, IMO is an awful picture and as the top grossing movie of it's release year it may be the worst film to ever have that honour (yes not even SPIDER MAN 3 is that bad).

Shut up, this a great movie I watch every holiday season along with the cartoon and a bunch of other films. It's the only movie I have so far seen on the first day in theaters.
