WHY exactly do people dislike the movie?

I don't get it. Yeah, it's not the cartoon, okay, the whole backstory, well they needed SOME way to fill up 1 1/2 hours instead of 25 minutes, but what's people's REAL problem with it?

I'm showing it to my students (they voted on it) and it's... just terribly boring. I can't explain it... Jim Carrey is running around, cavorting and grimacing madly, the colors are bright, everyone is camping it up as hard as they can but... it's just not coming together. And the storyline about the obnoxious little girl who we are supposed to find heart-meltingly cute is just not appealing.

The only character who doesn't make me weary is the dog.

Boring? This movie? 

reply

Yes, it is absolutely astounding to realize that director Ron Howard and star Jim Carrey can't turn this into an entertaining movie, yet here we are with a result that is loud and colorful but ultimately meaninglessly boring.

reply

I totally don't get it either. And for me, I never liked the cartoon or books when I was a kid but when I saw this movie, I loved it! Heck, I just bought it on DVD & watching it right now.
I just don't get the dislike for it or the IMDb score that it has right now.
The only thing that maybe stands out is maybe Jim Carey is too Jim Carey in it?
If it's not that then I really don't get the dislike for it.

Okay, I'll chime in.

I don't hate this movie or anything but I think it's pretty obvious as to why some people do.

I'm not particularly fond of it though and like a certain other live action Dr. Seuss adaptation, 'The Cat in the Hat' for one, it's crude and puerile just for the sake of it. I'm no prude either, I can't stand censorship in movies and the likings. But how do these "jokes" contribute to the story? Did anybody find the forced innuendo funny? The original 1966 version is a classic in the traditional sense. Boris Karloff added a certain charm to The Grinch and pulled it off perfectly in my opinion.

You should probably ask yourself "What would Dr. Seuss think?". Do you think he'd like it? Some people impulse grade the movie, some people may have watched the trailer and that's all. But some people dislike it because it's not the original, which I think is wrong. Just because it's an adaption/remake doesn't mean it's automatically bad.

I'm not saying this movie doesn't have heart, it kind of does. But the execution and use of extreme close-up shots are quite nauseating, this isn't the house of mirrors for *beep* crying out loud. Also, those weird flirtatious scenes between the chick and The Grinch easily shift this movie from a 6/10 to a 4/10. And those school scenes, c'mon, I just wanted to shout "NO!" throughout the duration they were on. Nothing against creative writing, but all of the pointless sex jokes scattered throughout the movie spoiled it for me. It's just not what I perceived The Grinch to be about.

Burton handled it perfectly in his iconic fairy-tale 'Edward Scissorhands'. Without sounding like a cocky a-hole, innuendo can be funny, just check out 'A Fish Called Wanda' and 'Monty Python' to see how it should be done.

The score however is perfect, Danny Elfman always delivers no matter what movie he does.

Roald Dahl hated Willy Wonka but that was a good movie.

I realise it works both ways. Stephen King also hates several film adaptions of his work, the same with Alan Moore.

I can understand why Dahl disliked the original, it was too schmaltzy in places and it didn't really capture the bleak humour in Dahl's novel. It seems the filmmakers had something else in mind. But that's Hollywood I guess.

Maybe other people will bring up their thoughts about The Grinch instead of just saying how bad it is. Maybe I'm a little too hard on it? I haven't watched the movie in years.

The don't have a funny bone. This movie is one laugh riot after another.

I've stared at walls that were funnier than this movie.

People say that Jim's portrayal of the Grinch is spastic and crazy and too disjointed but to me it makes sense. The Grinch has lived most of his life alone on the mountain. It would stand to reason that he'd be a little off his rocker and nuts.

reply

Yes Jim Carrey is the main reason I watch this movie.

Back then when I saw it in the theaters as a kid, it was good, but as I got older, it just got bad. I think my main problem with it was the bulk of the film (the beginning all the way through to when he starts to steal Christmas) was incredibly boring. I think that was mostly my issue. When I got older and revisited it, the part that drove me nuts was the fact that Cindy Lou Who didn't recognize the Grinch in the Santa outfit, even though she has seen him plenty of times before Christmas Eve. Was she mentally blocking it out, or was she really just that stupid? Regardless, those are my main problems with the film.
