Frodo and Sam: an irresponsible romance?

Sam was Frodo’s employee, yet Frodo still took advantage of his privilege in order to exploit Sam sexually. Frodo should have known that their relationship represented an asymmetrical power dynamic and that Sam would not be able to refuse his advances without fearing the loss of his livelihood. I got that this came out years ago, but the whole romance between Frodo and Sam reeks of abuse of power

I thought their love was pure and deep enough to overcome all of that.

Oh, shut up you tart! You'll be saying that WWI soldiers had the hots for each other next! Pervert!

reply

It is undoubtedly true that there *were* WW1 soldiers who had the hots for each other!

And it's also undoubtedly true that Tolkien would not have had a clue that the lovers in his he knew were more than great chums, worldly he was not.

I've read and re-read the books many time, and in the books it's clear that most of the feelings are on Sam's side, and that Frodo is too fucked up to have much feeling for anyone.
