Previous films required viewing?

Do I need to watch the previous two movies to understand or enjoy this? Just looking for a good fantasy / dungeon-crawler type movie. Thanks!

Yes. Absolutely. It's all one long story, and there's no attempt to fill the viewer in on what happened in the first two films.

Same as the books, which is basically one very long book, arbitrarily published as three.

Yes, I'd recommend the extended editions. It's a lengthy, albeit definitive viewing experience. The LOTR films are a journey and you may as well be on it for the long haul.
