Low budget movie with big stars?
How did the director manage to get all these stars to make a cameo appearance in this low budget movie?
Show me the holes!

He is friends with a lot of them. He knows Michael J. Fox and Chris Lloyd from "Back to the Future" (he wrote all three films). I hear the other actors jumped on board cause they liked the script.

Yeah, he knew them from Back to the Future, and he and Zemeckis gave Kurt Russell the lead in Used Cars, which completed his transition from being a child actor into being a movie star, so he definitely owed a debt to Gale as well. As for the others, Chris Cooper and Gary Oldman do a lot of independent films, so they probably didn't care about the money, and James Marsden wasn't exactly a box office draw (still isn't really). And I would imagine a lot of the actors just liked Back to the Future and wanted to do a movie with its creator. Given that he hasn't written or directed anything since then, it was probably a wise choice as there probably won't be another chance.
