OMG, this is so frustrating...I got the dvds from the library, and for at least season 1, the episodes are not in order! The even go between the 3 dvds. This is so annoying. It probably doesn't make that much of a difference, the stories don't exactly cross episodes, but still...who the heck decided to do this?! Lol.
Ok, I just compared my season 1 DVD to the link you posted on wiki, and what I said seems to be true.
For example, here's the first three episodes of season 1 in order of air date (according to the link you posted): Pilot, Fat City, Cello, Goodbye.
However, on my season 1 DVD, the first three episodes are: Pilot, Head First, Fat City. And according to the link you posted, these are the first three episodes in order of production date. So it means the DVD, at least in season 1, has the episodes in order of production date, not air date.
I agree with you. Even though my dvd has the episodes in order of production date, I still watch them in order of air date, because's that's how they were originally shown to the viewers. That said, most KOQ episodes have a new storyline each episode instead of a continuing one, so I guess it doesn't really matter what order you watch the episodes in.
Edit: One thing I do find weird is why air episodes out of order in the first place? KOQ, season 1 in particular, had episodes that were made early, and yet aired after episodes that were made later. I don't see why the network would do that.
I agree that each episode has its own story line and arc, independent of other episodes. So, the order in which we watch the episodes is essentially irrelevant. There might be some very minor continuity issues, but nothing significant.
As to why they air them out of order to begin with, there might be a million reasons. I assume they are administrative and logistical. For example, they haven't' quite finished the edits to that last episode, so they will show a fully completed episode this week instead. Maybe there is some lag or delay in securing some rights to the background music. Maybe there are some legal snafus that need to be tended to. Probably a million reasons. And I assume they are mostly logistical and administrative. Maybe a lot of post-production editing issues, also. ("The guy who handles that detail is out sick this week. But he will be back next week." Stuff like that.)
In other words, the actual filming of the episode is one thing. But I assume there are a million other factors that make the episode "finished", after the filming is wrapped (i.e., the post-production details).
What you are saying is true. It's also possible that certain episodes have guest stars that were only available during certain times, thus they may have had to film certain episodes earlier (or later) than they wanted to.
I don't think that the network has anything to do with it.
I think that the network just airs whatever episode they are given by the production company.
So, the production company completes an episode in its entirety; they "hand it off" to the network; the network airs that episode that week.
There is probably some contractual arrangement between the two that says "the production company will deliver to the network one episode per week" or some such.
Thank you everyone for clearing this up for me! I just come on here (IMDB) to see the trivia and goofs listed for each episode as I'm watching them, so it was frustrating to have to bounce around.
