Peter Bowles' Supt. Lucas character in The Double Kill - SPOILERS

1) Why didn't he tell Hugh Briant his wife wasn't dead? Is it because Lucas was suspicious Briant assumed his wife was dead as Briant didn't ask if she was injured and in hospital?

2) If Lucas thought Briant had some involvement in his wife being stabbed, then Lucas must take MOST of the responsibility for Briant tracking down Max Burns and killing him. If Lucas had told Briant his wife was still alive, then there would be no need for vengeance as Briant had thought he might go to jail for the murder.

If Briant had been told his wife was alive then he really would have something to panic about.
His wife could identify Burns ,who would then implicate him.
Lucas was certainly acting outside of the law, but nevertheless a great episode.

I suppose Lucas' rationale was that the whole situation looked like an inside job and Briant was the obvious suspect , and Briant's behaviour did nothing to lessen the suspicion.
Great performance by Gary Collins as was his other appearances in Thriller.
