shareIt seemed to me that he was forced to do it, kinda like an unspoken agreement between him and Sal so she wouldn't rat on him to the others and so that she'd let him go back to the island. She found him attractive (who wouldn't) and she was old enough and pragmatic enough to differentiate sex from love as she made it clear that Bugs was his partner while Richard was basically a *beep* buddy. In her mind she probably wasn't even cheating, cuz it was just physical not emotional.

shareI guess Richard was into it because any man would have done the same in that kind of situation and I'm sure he regretted being forced to cheat on his new girlfriend because of Sal but he could have at least told Francoise that Sal forced him to have sex with her and when Francoise found out thanks to Sal, Richard could have tried to make amends with her and get her back as his girlfriend but all this could have been avoided if he didn't copy the map
