Am I The Only One?

Who loved this film as a teenager but hate it as an adult? Looking at the film nowadays I seriously can't think of one redeeming quality that this film actually has going for it today. It can't even decide whether or not if it wants to be a coming of age teen flick or a raunchy comedy for god's sake.

For me the 80's >>> 90's for sure. Especially when it comes to comedies.

In fact it's actually quite a sweet film about relationships disguised as a puerile sex comedy. Obviously there are a lot of crass elements in there but those kind of get left behind towards the end and the film finishes up being about how we should try and take care of each other a little bit. That makes it OK in my book (never saw it when I was younger).

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

reply

I don't laugh at it anymore but I like some of the songs.

I hated it when I was a teenager and I wouldn't waste my time with it as an adult. It was very mean spirited and unfunny, I felt at least Superbad was more clever, less vapid and more of a fun film.

reply

Mean spirited? How?

reply

Lol that's why American Pie is regarded as a classic and Superbad, not.

reply

Superbad is definitely regarded as a classic. The writing in the film is much wittier and funnier. Not hating on American Pie but Superbad is definitely the superior film. A lot of comedies since the mid-2000s have actually gotten much wittier than 90s comedies. I'm a 90s kid too but I must admit the truth.

reply

I thought American Pie 2 was better, in my opinion.

reply

So did I but you can't deny that it's aged horribly though.

reply

It was never very good.

"'Extremely High Voltage.' Well, I don't need safety gloves, because I'm Homer Sim--" - Frank Grimes

reply

I was in my mid 20s when it came out but didn't think much of then... and don't think much of it now. I've always enjoyed the scenes with Michelle though.

reply

Typical, you only like the lame character. Stifler rules.

reply

Yes, you're the only putz. The movie rules

I just watched this (& PIE 2) again yesterday & FOR ME, the only things that 'date' this series seems to be the lack of cell phones, the web cam & (though I'm 33, NOT an 'grumpy old man') the actually respectful way these 'kids' interact w/ the parents (save of course for Stiffler in REUNION)

I fell asleep during INCEPTION BUT I FEEL like I still saw it!

reply

I still can enjoy it.
