Another gay movie.....so who's gonna get dumped and/or die of aids?

Im so sick of these dark films about homosexuality. There's a formula forming. What's funny is that the media follows it religiously because they know how OCD gay youths are about watching something "new" and not something God forbid 4 months old. So they make the same film over and over and over, and make it steamier and raunchier every time it comes out. Can we be a little original about it for a change?

Not older......gay films of exactly the same subject were made back in the 80s and early 90s, Parting Glances, My Own Private Idaho, Prick your ears, just to name a few. I guess I don't blame directors for tackling the subject again, however. After all, when a director makes a film, his main objective is not to necessarily make an artistic point, but rather to meet his financial obligation to the people who have invested in the film. If the common public wants crap, give them crap, just as long as it brings in more money.

BTW, it isnt necessarily said that the couple ends up together in the end of Beautiful Thing. I actually was under the impression that the twink and his boozed up mama were really going to move and leave the confused jock behind. The dancing at the end was just a weird and dumb way to finish off the film.

Many gay movie follow the formula of 'coming out'/'AIDS'/'love of straight guy'. Possibly because (less so now with AIDS) these issues are of concern to young gay men. There are a few other movies that don't follow the formula. Have you seen............

Grand Sons
Hollow Reed (not to be confused with Wild Reeds)
The Sum of Us
Big Eden
Burnt Money (a great gay crime thriller that Tarentino would be happy with!!!)
To The Extreme
Brokeback Mountain, Making Love and Victim (the married, but gay, genre)
Mysterious Skin
Bad Education
Bear Cub
Lola and Billy The Kid (cultural clash genre)

I'm approaching middle age and many gay moves don't 'speak' to me as they once did (though I still enjoy them). Somehow though I don't think that there will be too many movies made about gay guys not being able to share their superannuation (pension/401k for US readers) with their partners. The Sum of Us however did have a brief scene of 2 aged lesbians being separated.

The coming out/getting dumped genre will still be with us for a long time yet.
