Good movie - Spoilers
Good acting, good story for the most part, and not too preachy. The on-going theme that mothers always lovingly accept their gay sons is a load of cr@p. There are lots of mothers who would turn their gay sons out on the street without an ounce of remorse regardless of the pain and suffering they would be inflicting on that child.
A great ending would have been for John to declare his love for Steve in defiance to his anti-gay "friends".
The end was actually anti-climatic. After everything Steve went through (and John as well), it was totally disappointing for Steve and Linda to drive off together. What was that about?
Unless you are gay you have absolutely no idea how rough it is to be gay. Anyone moronic enough to say that someone chooses to be gay hasn't got a clue.
There are lots of people who struggle with different issues that set them apart from others. IMHO gay young people, and gays in general, experience more isolation than most. There are no parents to turn to or religious organizations. There are few (if any) friends to turn to and probably no teachers to turn to either. Nothing is more painful than being out in the world totally on your own. Steve was lucky he had the people in his life who did support him. I think the negative reactions he got were more realistic of what gay people face every day.
