Just remember: they were only 16 or 17 years old

I saw the movie for the first time last night and see that here on imdb there's a lot of interesting and engaging discussions about Steven and John's relationship. They should have stayed together, no--John was a jerk, etc., etc.

I guess my intitial reaction at the end was that John was being a coward and giving up something that could have been great, but then I got to thinking "But they're only 16 or 17 years old." I think that John can be excused for some emotional insecurity at that age. I mean, I didn't come to terms with my sexuality until I was 21 so these guys had a four to five year head start on me. If I had been confronted with a gay relationship when I was 16 I probably would have had a nervous breakdown.

Just a thought.
