Accent Assistance

Could someone identify John's accent for me? Even though his parents had just a few lines, I didn't hear a similar accent from them. Theirs seemed a bit more posh--closer to Steven's than John's.

I love this film! I've already watched it 6 times and intend to watch it another 6 before shipping it back to Netflix. It's right up there with Shelter and Just a Question of Love in my book.

Now that you know my taste in films, if anyone has others to recommend that are as good as these three, I would be eternally grateful. It was the Shelter discussion board that turned me on to Just a Question and Get Real in the first place.

Can't help you with the accent, but I really liked Formula 17. It is a very nice love story, and I happen to find Asian men very attractive. Heck, there are good looking men of every variety. Anyway, PM me after you watch it.

There is one thing that is very unusual about this movie and I didn't catch it myself. A friend had to point it out to me. See if you can figure it out. :)

I'll send more titles as I think of them. Of course, you've seen Latter Days and Brokeback Mountain right?

You also might want to check out my reviews on Netflix, I'm RL loves movies. I think I've seen about every Gay movie Netflix has.

Thanks for the suggestion, jaroslaw99. I should be receiving Formula 17 from Netflix in a day or two. I accept your challenge to find something unusual. The pressure's on!

Yes to Latter Days and Brokeback Mountain. I look forward to reviewing your reviews. I've ordered one too many crappy movies from Netflix, so now if a flick is not recommended by someone I don't touch it.

reply

well, you have to be careful about NF reviews. I was reading the ones about "Something New" (not even sure why I ordered it) but anyway, Sanaa Lathan was described as having a very expressive face and by others a face of stone. However, if the vast majority of the reviews are one or two stars, then it is a dud.

For example, be sure to read my review of "Chuck & Buck". Then read some of the other ones. I'm totally lost why some people thought this movie was great. Personally, I think there are some people with what I call an "artsy fartsy" world viewpoint. In other words, art is sometimes thought to be ethereal and deeply personally, reflecting the artist's inner whatever. And if the general public (including artsy fartsy) can't understand it, then there "must" be a really deep hidden meaning therefore this film/sculpture/book whatever must be REALLY great.

I know this thread is terribly old, but I thought I'd respond anyway regarding your question about the accent.

John has what is known as an "Estuary English" accent. It's an accent that has characteristics of Received Pronunciation (which Steven speaks) and the local English accent spoken in and around the area of the Thames Estuary.

About the others films, have you seen Maurice? It's based on the book by EM Forster. It's very good.

reply

Thanks for the clarification. And yes, I have seen Maurice. It's one of my favorite films.
