Do you think Mark accepts Steven's sexuality?

Whenever I watch the movie in widescreen format, instead of cropped at the edges, I can see Mark sitting next to Wendy and Jessica in the school assembly hall. One thing I've noticed is that while Steven walks off the stage and through the center aisle, Jessica, Wendy, and Mark are all standing, but of the three of them, only Jessica and Wendy are applauding. Mark just stands there. He doesn't say anything for the rest of the movie.

Thinking about that reminds me of an earlier scene, when Mark mentioned that doing an article about gay guys cruising in the public park would make the magazine "more radical." Later, when Mark found the Get Real article in the computer, he said "We can't print this," as if it was too radical.

Basingstoke's culture is quite conservative, and while Jessica and Wendy are quite liberal in their attitudes toward gay guys, maybe Mark isn't. Maybe he fits in more with the community's conservatism.

Do you think Steven lost Mark's friendship?

It may be a moot point. Jessica will drive it just as she was first to stand and start applauding. She will encourage Wendy even more and then assuming that Wendy and Mark are now close, she will pull Mark along in spite of his inbred prejudices. But I COULD see the scenario of tolerance and not acceptance and therefore the loss of the friendship.
