A bit conveluted

In my opinion, the story got a bit conveluted and carried away with the whole family thing. Way to many names to remember, especially when none of the characters get any individual presentation. Basically, I had no idea what was going on when Depp found that testimony and when mrs. Crane explained her evil plan, because non of the names ringed a bell. Its still an absurdly entertaining movie with great visuals, typical burton. But that whole exposition thingy just didnt work

reply

It's a bit complicated the first time around, but it becomes more clear upon subsequent viewing. The most important thing was that Mrs. van Tassel wanted her husband's family's fortune as revenge and blackmailed some of the villagers to get it, killing them one by one afterwards.

reply

Not really that difficult to remember.

Oh my God.

reply

Oh, good. It wasn't just me!

I'm terribly sorry, as someone who's main language isn't english such little mistakes can happen from time to time. Still, I think as someone who speaks 5 languages pretty well, I'm doing alright with my english skills. Americans could learn a thing or two from us lingustic geniuses called Europeans. ;)

reply

How do you know everyone that responded to you is American? Or are you acting high and mighty just because. Linguistic geniuses? Give me a break. Narcissistic much? I bet I could speak five languages too if I was surrounded by a bunch of countries instead of water on both sides. Get over yourself.

reply

Now I bet you are american. And no, it's not because we are sourounded by them, it's because we learn them in school. America is well known for not being a linguistic country. Sure, you have a lot of minorities but neither they nor the "original" americans learn more than one language.

So what? You can cry all you want and call me narcisstic (it was a joke after all, I thought the winkie emoji was pretty obvious) it doesn't change the fact that you don't speak 5 languages and I do.

reply

Lol. They corrected your spelling and it offends you? You should be willing to learn. Only the foolish get offended when corrected. Stop being a child.

reply

On something as dumb as a message board, it's just petty and usually seems more of a way for someone to feel elivated by sharing their intellect and pointing out how you misspelled this and this etc. There is no reason for it. This isn't a term paper. If the person was genuinely concerned about their spelling, they could have PMed the person rather than pointing it out to everyone. There are many reasons something could be mispelled on a message board. And it's no big deal. If it was a professional article or something, then sure... But a throw away comment that's not even going to remain in anyone's conciousness by next week... It's silly to pick it apart.

reply

Thanks man. I appreciate that.

reply

Yes, I can see how stupid people would have a problem following the plot.

There is a rather glaring plothole in the plan of the Lady Van Tassel, but that could've been easily avoided with a single line of dialogue.

reply

Stupid? My god, even the nostalgia critic said that the plot doesnt make a lot of sense. Its not complicated, but as someone who isnt good at remembering names, I just kind of got lost when depp revealed his discoveries.

reply

My god, even the nostalgia critic said that the plot doesnt make a lot of sense.

And nostalgia critic is some kind of genius or something? Why does everybody keep bringing up this guy, how is anything he says relevant?

reply

Well, denying that he had no influence on video reviews wouldn't be quite right. He isn't right about everything but he does know a lot about movies, more so than the general public. And when I say even the nostalgia critic, I say that because he is a big influence and a lot of people agree with his statements. Besides, I'm pretty sure a lot of other critics criticized Sleepy hollows narrative

reply

Perhaps you find the Nostalgia Critic funny and insightful, but I don't care about anything he has to say. Somebody posted a video on here that he did where someone had told him this movie was influenced by the Hammer studios movies and he reevaluated the movie and asked if it was 'secretly brilliant' or something to that effect. Most of the critics who reviewed it at the time, and indeed most people who know a lot about movies, recognized that influence right away. He's just some dude on YouTube with no particular insight or knowledge. And he's not funny and has *beep* production values. I've never found the plot hard to follow, myself.

reply

Why does he even have influence? He's just some random guy, I don't care what he has to say unless he comes on this board and civilly joins the discussion. Ignore him and he won't have any influence.

reply

Well he has no influence with me. I've seen one or two of his videos and never understood why people would watch the guy.

reply

okay, so you don't care what he says, it's still blatantly obvious that he has a huge following and people seem to agree with the things he has to say mainly because he points out flaws most people tend to ignore. My favorite critic is chris stuckmann because he shares the same taste as me and I usually agree with the things he has to say, plus he knows a lot about movies so thats always a plus

reply

-- but as someone who isnt good at remembering names --
Then perhaps a notepad??

reply

It's not stupid people's problem. It's just first time viewers problem. And that's an issue with the movie, not the viewers.

reply

Yep, I just didnt catch who is who because Burton didn't introduce the characters all that well.

reply

So is your spelling & grammar.

reply

I already apologized for my spelling above. Little mistakes like that can happen when you're on your phone and writing in a hurry.

reply

In a village as small as Sleepy Hollow, it can be extremely difficult to keep secrets without other people finding out about it. As Katrina had said, practically everyone in town is linked together by blood or marriage.

When the stepmother was killing off the Van Garretts and the Van Tassels, she was also killing, blackmailing or seducing anyone else who was in a position to find out about her scheme, but the Van Garretts and Van Tassels were her main targets.

reply

I agree, OP. I had to go back to get the names. Once you get that, all falls into place.

reply

I don't think you deserve the hate you're getting. I, too, think the story gets confusing, especially during the second half. There are too many names to remember and it just begins to drag while it turns into some sleuth movie and diverts from the focus that was there in the first half.
