SPOILER!! Why did the hub pretend to be accidentally electrocuted?

I haven't seen the film for a while so could be wrong but I THINK it was to get sympathy from Claire and stop her leaving.

Sympathy obviously. Once he was fine she suspected he staged it. The circuit breaker just so happened to pop to stop him from getting electrocuted to death.
