I too would have preferred "Plainy Laney." THE only thing that got on my nerves about Laney is how hard she is to be nice to. Were it not for the fact that Freddie's character is a good looking & popular guy, and if Laney were popular herself, I see her as the kind who'd've kinda tempted getting on my nerves, thinking someone was liking her like that -- say, for instance -- if a guy just wished to strike up a good conversation and she just happened to be near by (to see what type of conversationalist she is).
What I saw is she assumes too much for my tastes, and she made me think of how so many people misread signals, or just don't want to be bothered with really meeting "new people" -- or certain people -- though they often say this is the case. All that's just intolerable to me. Sorry, but for me you'd have to be able to hold a conversation with a homeless guy...or Queen Elizabeth and not be bent outta shape if either one knows more or less than you about anything at all. Too, it's you gotta be able to either compliment or curse em both out if called for; I know I would. Of course, she'd be too young for me anyway, and I only babysit my siblings' kids on occasion.
