Still Sofia Coppola's best work for me
I know some will go to bat for Lost In Translation for this spot, and I understand. I'm not a big fan of that film besides Bill Murray's performance and the excellent soundtrack. Just never connected with me. I probably watch it again and things might change.
But for now I think The Virgin Suicides just works overall better as a film for me. The Air Soundtrack is their best work imo. The use of 70's song is great. James Woods and Kathleen Turner are both excellent in short roles, especially Woods. Kristen Dunst has never looked as alluring or as beautiful then in this (didn't buy her as a 14 year old at all). Josh Hartnett was good as well, he played a good douche jock. At 1hr 32mins it's one of Coppola's easier watches as a lot of her films drag for me. I liked Giovanni Ribisi's voice over, kind of soothing and suited the tone of the film.
Dunst is probably the most well known out of the sisters. But Hanna R Hall played Cecilla was young Jenny in Forrest Gump and was Rob Zombie's Halloween, she had the most interesting role outside of Dunsts from the actresses playing the sisters. A.J Cook who played Mary Lisbon has worked TV show Criminal Minds since it's beginning. Chelse Swain and Leslie Hayman did nothing of note, especially Hayman who did nothing after this film. But they all definitely leave their mark.
You can see the influence of Peter Weir's Pinic at Hanging Rock all over it. But Coppola leaves her own stamp on it and produces a film she's yet to top for me. You can see why Criterion Collection released this recently.
