The Virgin Suicides (2000?)
The Virgin Suicides is a film that will definitely stay with you. I don't know how much general audiences will know about it, but this is a film that handles several things with a beautiful subtlety and delicacy that is surprising for a film like this. Or so you think. There's definite humor and angst in this, but the overall effect is a punch to the gut. The screenplay is fantastic, but more notable is Coppola's touch. It's quite difficult to handle a film like this because the tones could vary so much and the end result could easily be a failure, but again, she ultimately makes this be a melancholic, effective but never heavy handed or over the top exercise, one that stands as far more effective than almost any teenage film existing.
A
2000 because it came out in 2000 in US, right? This is my second Coppola film, my first being Lost in Translation, and it's so much better.
