Didn't they wear rather revealing clothing for such strict parents?!!

I thought Lux wore some pretty risque clothes for having such strict parents!!
Heck, I wouldn't have been able to wear half of her tops when I was that age lol!

The sisters wore some tight risque clothing once or twice too.

The girls were generally only permitted to socialise with each other, so I suppose even Crazy Mama didn't care much what clothing they wore when they were in the house or on a family outing. There were no males around to conceal themselves from. She did tell Lux to put a shirt on when they had a boy over for dinner, and she did make them wear full-cut shapeless dresses to prom.

During Cecelia's party they were wearing more risqué clothes, but that was directly after the psychiatrist had basically told the parents that they needed to be less strict, which they tried to do until Cecelia killed herself.

Lux's school uniform was a little bit trashy but wasn't revealing, and she probably hoisted up her skirt as soon as she left the house, and pulled it back down before going home! She wouldn't be the first teenage girl to do so.

The mirror... it's broken.
Yes, I know. I like it that way. Makes me look the way I feel.

I came here to comment on that. I have only seen the second half of the movie but I was able to see the party where Cecelia kills herself on youtube and the other sisters were wearing QUITE revealing clothes. the one red dress was only held up by two straps -- like a bra. what the hell?

and I may be missing something but what is with the party being ENTIRELY of boys???

"and I may be missing something but what is with the party being ENTIRELY of boys???"

The psychiatrist told them that their daughter needed to be around boys her own age. This party was the parents odd way of following that advice.

its on again and I was able to catch the beginning and my question and fiatlux's original post still stands...

they were allowed to dress a little on the trashy side in mixed company way before that party.

when they invited peter over Lux had a shirt/dress on that was only held up by spaghetti straps -- and her mother is all 'put on your shirt for god sakes...'

I don't know why they didn't put her in an institution when she attempted to kill herself the first time.

I also never thought the girls acted like a bunch of people who lived an 'odd lifestyle'.
They seemed like otherworldly beings, always smirking, never shy or awkward (except a little at their first dance).
The director didn't really succeed in translating this from the novel.
I will say the cinematography is simply amazing, its gorgeous. But the content needed more attention.

Except the record burning (and the other behaviors of Mrs. Lisbon) are pretty much as written in the book--Sophia Coppola didn't make all that many decisions, content-wise. There are a few changes, but they are incredibly minor (other than the fact that Mary didn't die right away and ended up killing herself a little bit later.
