What really pissed me off!

That idiot "Trip" claimed to be in love and head over heals with Lux then hit it and quit it after homecoming. he screwed her on a football field of all places and left her there all night claiming he didn't care how she got home smh...probably helped send her over the edge!

"FRESH". it changed my life.

reply

Unfortunately this happens in real life, both with men and women. I suppose Trip was 'suffering' from the classic "wanting what he couldn't have". i think it was more an issue of him lusting after than being in love with her. Once Lux became attainable, he no longer saw her as an alluring and interesting figure; she was just another of the many women he could get with.

yea but you know how it is with double standards.

Sex is like hugging, only wetter.

reply

Double standards are rubbish for everyone, and guys actually screwed THEMSELVES over when they started calling women whores:

Think about it. A man wants to have sex with loads of women, but unfortunately for him, a great deal of the women won't have sex with him - because they don't want to be labelled a slut.

Men criticize women and call them names for giving them something that they WANT? They want a woman who enjoys sex, and is good at it, and then call them names to make them feel bad about it?! Where is the logic there?! Easily the stupidest, most counter-intuitive dick move EVER made by the male species! The double standard helps no-one, it makes women feel hurt and ashamed of something that is natural, and it also denies men all the sex they could be having with various ladies.

If the word "whore" and words like it were never invented in an attempt to control women, and the double standard didn't exist, men would be getting more sex than they could ever dream of. It could have been wonderful.

But no, they chose to name-call and put women off having sex. I hope they are happy.

Seriously men... you really cock-blocked yourselves with that one.

WOW! I love that. I'm sharing it with my friends lol

Sex is like hugging, only wetter.

reply

From experience women still sleep around, they just deny the fact that they are sluts or whores by making excuses. There is this one girl that I knew who said she didn't believe in the word slut but gave over 14 guys blow jobs, and had sex with 4 guys, yet she doesn't count the blow jobs as actual partners. Which is laughable She even wanted to sleep with a guy who was clearly in a relationship with another girl, but didn't care because she thought the guy was really hot. She even said as long as a person isn't married it ''doesn't matter''. She was a b itch and a whore (obviously), yet kept claiming she wasn't. I personally don't care if there is a double standard because girls choose to act like this. At least guys are upfront about it. Men like easy girls but they don't respect them. Period.

Yeah taking someone else's partner is a bad thing to do, but I see no problem with women liking sex. It's natural, we've evolved to do it...nowhere in Darwin's theory does it say "women are to limit themselves pleasure to appease the insecurities of men!" - that's not scientific it's cultural, and traditions and cultures can be very very wrong. Look at foot binding, it's out of practice because it was wrong, and I believe this attitude towards women DARING to like sex is wrong too.

If we followed every single tradition without questioning it, we would live in a very backwards world indeed.

But yeah, seriously men, well done for cock blocking yourselves by calling women whores. That's why you can't get laid, women don't want you to call them a whore for sleeping with you! Tell your left hand I said hi.

Truly Happy Mondayed.

reply

Once again, who said there was anything wrong with liking sex? There is however something gross and unsettling about someone who has had more than 30 partners, and most of those were one night stands. Believe in ''Darwin's theory'' all you want but it's BS. Women or at least most of them aren't 'not' having sex, they just don't tell everyone about it. And stop calling men insecure just because they don't want a girl whose been with 30+ men. That is natural and understandable. The only men that can't get laid are either poor, unattractive, or both. So just stop..

First of all, using the word "retarded" says a lot about your character. I would never use that word, it's hurtful to disabled people. Really your willingness to use such hideousness in language describes you more than it does me. "Retarded"...wow. I hope you never become disabled and have to hear that kind of ignorance.

I feel no hurt or shame at you calling me a slut. First of all, it means nothing. Secondly, you have no knowledge of my sexual history, and I do not need to have slept with the World in order to be passionate about women's rights. Just as I am white and have a great love for reading about the civil rights movement.

I'm not bitter about any men at all, as a matter of fact, I've enjoyed every man I've had a relationship with very much.

Whoever said men didn't want we? Jeez, I can't get rid your species sometimes!

"There is a high number of gay men with HIV/AIDS. Straight men don't care about gay men because they aren't interested in the first place"

HAHAHA what an uneducated twerp you are. I said that gay men are never called whores when out experimenting with men, they are celebrated (rightly so) as coming out and expressing themselves. But apparently that doesn't matter because "straight men don't care" - have you actually proof read that sentence before sending it?

If AIDS is exclusively gay then why do hardly any lesbians get it? And I hate to shock you, but there are a high amount of straight men with AIDS as well.

So the only opinions in the World worth listening to are straight men? Wow, no wonder you called me a feminist expletive, you are clearly a neanderthal who would have beaten his wife in the 50's. It's your attitude. It reeks of domestic violence because you keep trying to normalize the hypocrisy of men, something wife beaters do every day.

Of course you don't NEED to read a book to stay clear of "freaks like me" you silly boy - I just thought a little reading might heighten your dwindling IQ!

Oh and I won't worry about your beliefs, you're CLEARLY a Christian.

May Darwin bless you.

And DO read that book!

But there's another question, who is she having sex with? Other women?

She's sleeping with males and her male partners are as whorish and bitchy as she is.

reply

[deleted]

That pissed me off as well. It just goes to show you that some boys will put in all of that effort to get close to you, but once you give them what they want, they'll cut and run. It's sad, and it's not the girls' fault. They just need better judgment. My thing is, a real man would have enough patience to wait it out with you. I felt so bad for Lux and what became of her. I liked it when the woman said, "Time for your group meeting!" in a harsh voice as if she were disgusted in what she had heard.

You love me more than sunny summer days.

True Tripp could have helped he sneak in the house before her parents woke up or something. Thank goodness Lux did not get raped after he left.

reply

true.

Then explain the high marriage and long term relationship rates.

reply

I believe he was essentially having sex with himself. This may sound ridiculous but I will try to elaborate til reason.

Trip could have any girl he wanted and when Lux strayed away from his flirtations his ego was shattered. He began to try very hard to please Lux and when he finally had sex with her, he metaphorically reached his own climax in terms of his potential and left her alone on the field because in his perception, she didn't matter any more. She was a door to Trip himself which reminds me of the Lou Reed lyric, "Why it is though she's the door She can't be the room," (which is a little unrelated but its freakin sad that he died today, so RIP Louie)

The director also showed Trip as an adult. I never read the book but I assume he is in a hospital because a health care professional reminds him his group meeting is about to start. It shows that Trip reached his height in high school and declined in mental health as an adult. If you remember, he made love to Lux (physically) on a football field, which is another aspect of himself. He made love to her in his own world in a sense. The important thing is that Trip says its rare to love anyone like that but at least he did it. I don't think he will ever love anyone as much as himself and it shows consistently throughout the Virgin Suicides that he is a troubled narcissist.

If anyone disagrees or feels I'm missing something, please share your thoughts

reply

You're right about Trip being in a hospital...or more specifically, a rehab facility (as per the book).

I hadn't considered looking at him as a narcissist before, but now that you mention it, your entire analysis makes a lot of sense and gels well with what is depicted both in the film and the book.

At the same time, drug abuse can often mimic the symptoms of true narcissistic pathologies (like, narcissistic personality disorder), and can simultaneously stunt emotional development. However, drug and/or alcohol abuse is often co-morbid with NPD as well, so it's hardly a differential diagnosis.

It's difficult to know if the motivations for this character to stay on drugs were partly about not facing the reality of the tragic chain of events that he help spark (indicating that if he did, he would actually feel quite terrible about it, and probably isn't truly a narcissist), or whether that really is his personality; A very disordered, pathological personality.

I guess the book and film really did do it's job, eh?

It puts us in the shoes of the boys who looked on, but could never quite unlock the puzzle of what happened...and your analysis of Trip has just added another intriguing layer to this mystery sandwich!

Thanks for giving me something extremely interesting to think about.

I agree it was crappy for him to do. I feel like for trip and lux their sexual tension was magical and exciting, but once they actually did the deed everything changed and all the magic was gone. And this is why trip left. Lux obviously felt like *beep* after that and she felt the same in that everything became different. Sex is now something she did because maybe she felt it was the only thing she had left of her as a person. Maybe she and trip just died metaphorically after they experienced something they thought would be magical. Trip now being in rehab and still looks back at lux as his only love, but he probably didn't love her as much as he loved those new experiences.
A time when everything is special and new didn't meet up to the harsh realities of life. Sorry I can't edit this since my phone is acting up. I'm probably off on some parts, but that's just how I saw it. I don't think you should look at it from the surface as just him being a jerk and that's it.

reply

Even if he lost all lust for her after that, he still was an *beep* for not at least waking her up. He should have gotten her home somehow.

reply

Agreed!
He was a total schmuck. I didn't buy that whole 'I'm a good guy but suddenly magically I'm not cause I'm sick of her' crap.
He was a jerk to begin with. He only liked Lux because she was a challenge.
