This movie was so depressing it made me ill

Now, I've seen my fair share of depressing movies I can assure you. But very few have impacted me to such a point that afterwards, I started feeling psychically ill. I can't stop thinking about this movie, I can't get images out of those poor damaged girls and naive disoriented boys. Jesus Christ man, this movie couldn't be any more sadder even if it tried...

On the upside, it's at least the first Sofia Coppola movie I've seen that I like. But will I ever watch it again? Never.

I completely agree with you. I have also seen some depressing movies (The Schindler's List being at the forefront) but this film made it hard for me to watch - I literally felt sick whilst watching it. The emotional aspects that I felt, just awful. I thin the perfect combination of accompanyng music score, made it just so much worse to watch. I don't know if I would have the courage to watch it again to be honest, seeing I watched it a few weeks ago.

I don't think a film like this could/would be released in 2016. These sorts of emotionally dark films were all the rage for a time in the 90s. Todd Solondz's Happiness and Storytelling, as well as American Beauty came out in the late 90s.

I truly miss that era of filmmaking.

Whilst dark, Happiness is one of the funniest films that I have ever seen.
