Good point, or they could have tried to run away. but I guess they felt like they had no choice and felt death was the only option.

You're taking this too literally. The girls are almost a metaphor rather than real characters. They are seen almost entirely from the perspective of the boys and what they do is intended be mysterious and without explanation.
