Penetration? *spoilers*

There's one thing that I've been wondering concerning this film, and that's if the protagonist was meant to be actually penetrated during the simulated rape scene, or if it was just implied.

That might sound like a strange question, but it's significant as to whether Rumi etc were concerned about her image in terms of 'she allows herself to play characters who get violated', or that 'she allows herself to engage in hardcore pornography'.

I know if this anime was made in the west, the answer would be the former, but Japan have far more relaxed attitudes towards sexual activity on TV (I heard the in-anime drama was meant to be straight to video, but it still causes me confusion nonetheless).

Can anyone answer this for me?

In that scene, I think she's actually being raped by MeMania or whatever...I hadn't noticed it myself, but a friend says you can see his reflection for a second or something.

reply

Nah, it isn't real; it was just acted. It affected her so much because she felt degraded. MeMania wasn't in that scene at all.

She wasn't really raped. It was just acting (although her boobs did show quite a bit).

They might have relaxed attitudes towards sexual activity, but I doubt they'd show something so extreme in primetime, which I figure it was due to it's dark themes... the rape scene on television would probably be slightly more frantic, though it would probably feel like a lifetime to the actress being fake-raped... but, yeah, they definately wouldn't stage an actual full blown rape scene, that'd be delving in pornography I'd think.
People were concerned that she was shedding her pop image for a more mature/risque one that her fans did not approve of, am I right?

No, there was no penetration involved. Even though Japan might have a more relaxed attitude towards sexuality in general on television, Rumi's main concern was really how Mima would undergo such a drastic image change. Remember that she was a "squeaky clean pop idol", whom even children idealized. Playing a character like that would have meant losing many fans, both young and old. In effect, Mima would be starting from scratch, and it would mean more work for Rumi to promote her client. Furthermore, acting out a scene like that is rather violating in a sense, and Rumi, knowing Mima so well, probably would have been concerned about Mima's emotional state, too.
