why didn't the authorities
Just go for Matty? Seems like they'd find him quicker and then could've been waiting for her there, or even found out from him about his dad.

shareBecause that would have made sense. Which just would not mesh well with the rest of the movie.
shareMaybe the dad had him registered at that school under a false name. Wouldn't make much sense to adopt a new identity and leave his son using one that can be traced right back to him.
shareTrue, but they still should have thought. "She's going to her kid. So, where's the kid? Oh, with the friend. Wait, she's dead? Where'd he go after that?" And followed up. And since they had the law on their side it imaginably would have been quick and easy for them to check. Even if they had trouble after the friend dying, that alone would've been a little suspicious, because you'd expect a record of him going into foster care or something at the very least. But it probably would've uncovered her marriage to the dad and still led back to him.
shareWell, because mostly because authorities were not looking for her. It was just her parole officer, who has requested for support from the local PD. She would never have got to Matty unless she goes through Nick first, which itself wasn't a sure shot thing. In my opinion, chasing her, when you know exactly where she would be was a logical decision.
