Does bender get any less emo/annoying? I'm really struggling to continue watching because of Bender.

I'd say keep at it, there's definitely more development between Fry and Bender. Season 1 is usually tough for most shows, as they aren't really sure how to develop some of the characters.
If you want to skip around, "Godfellas" is one episode that essentially stars Bender and is often considered one of the best of the entire series.

shareWell, as much as I'd love to say that you could bite Bender's shiny metal ass... that wouldn't be very constructive. And you're certainly entitled to your opinion. You might grow to like him too!
Seriously though, "Godfellas" is one of their best episodes. It's later in the series though, so if you're going in order and it's not grabbing you, it'll be a long wait for that one.
Futurama is actually quite an interesting show, where despite it being a comedy, they have some really heartfelt episodes as well. If you don't want to watch straight through, here are some others that are pretty touching overall:

Jurassic Bark (some would say THE saddest episode of the whole series).

The Late Philip J. Fry (often considered the best episode of the series).
