Watched again after a decade and realized Mean Girls is a rehash.
It's really been too long. Watched this movie last night and from the moment Cameron stepped onto campus, I recognized the scene. Mean Girls did it in the cafeteria, with some updated cultural context for the time. The similarities didn't end after that. Mean Girls did switch up some plot elements, characters, and mixed together various character traits to do their own thing.
Cady for instance is like a mishmash of characters from 10 Things. She's from Africa, while Patrick is from the less unknown Australia. She's like Cameron, in that she's the new kid who quickly gets embroiled in school politics. Both Cady and Regina have some similarities with Bianca as well, though Bianca was never as vicious as Regina. Both Bianca and Cady mellow out at the end, though.
The whole plan about getting Patrick to woo Kat was very reminiscent of the plan in Mean Girls as well, though Mean Girls was less romance focused. Then there's lesser things like Kat vomiting on Patrick's shoes, a party that gets wildly out of control. Outlandish rumors about Patrick. The team of Cameron and Will, who reminded me of Janice and Damien somewhat.
The parallels aren't perfect, though. I struggle to find similarities between Kat and anyone from Mean Girls, for instance.
Not really criticizing Mean Girls--it'll always be one of my go to movies for lazy watching. But I feel like it borrowed or rehashed a lot from 10 Things I Hate About You. If I watched both movies back to back, they'd both be very similar experiences.
