The character was good as a play off between Dalziel and Pascoe and she is still with Pascoe in the books right up to the latest one. It's a pity the producers/BBC couldn't get along with Reginald Hill after about Series 7 so they could keep following the books.
I thought most, if not all, of the books had been made into telefilms? It was my understanding they simply ran out of current books, and started creating original stories to keep the show airing. What happened between the producers and Mr. Hill?

The US producers wanted her written out, to cut costs. Reginald Hill was pretty mad about it, so then started writing new books.... naturally including Ellie, since she had been in all his novels. Which meant the BBC couldn't film them...... presumably they would have needed specific permission to adapt the new books.
