I thought Junuh was the main caracter, but it seems like its Bagger? What did I miss? And I dont get the ending, who's waving at the end? It cant be Mr bagger.. he's to old! Bot he told him that they would meet agein... Hmmmm
Either that or read Bhagvad Gita (or as much as you can handle of Mahabharata;)). The book that inspired the movie it's actually inspired itself from there.
I would have never imagined it applied in golf, as Bhagvad Gita is, on the surface, about war - but more about spirituality actually. However, the creator of Bagger Vance did a marvelous job in transposing the relation between prince Arjun and his charioteer Krishna on the battle field, into the relation between Junuh and Bagger on the golf field.
Coincidently or not (but I think not) Krishna is translated as "The Black One" (if memory serves me right) and I don't think I'm going too far by saying the author named the other main character Junuh by thinking of Arjun.
My feelings were that it was indeed Bagger waving at the end. Jack Lemmon's character had not awakened, but had died. Bagger was waving him home to Heaven.
Bagger vance was both Junnuh's and Lemmon's character's guardian angel in a way. That's why he was waving on the beach to Lemmon, because he was dying and was why when him and Junnuh were talking in the woods when Junnuh was struggling with the past, Bagger said he had been there all along...check out the quotes section on this site.
By the way, loveee this movie! This is definately Will Smith's best performance and I lovvveee Robert Redford movies. I wish he didn't get all leathery cuz he was a hottie.
Is it not also possible that Hardy Greaves died on the golf course when he had the heart attack and we are privy to flashbacks of his life? they do say that your life flashes past you when you drown, perhaps the same for a heart attack. if this is so, bagger's comment about always being there would ring true. As for the figure on the beach, it is without question bagger. this would indicate Hardy's death as he is united again with bagger. Bagger is easily interpreted as somewhat of an angel. perhaps he is there to take Hardy home...
