Why is there a lack of good golf movies? (Bagger Vance included)
Can anyone dig deeper than Caddyshack or Happy Gilmore and let me know if there are any other decent golf movies out there I should see????

share'The Greatest Game Ever Played' 2005, is pretty good.
Tin Cup
shareI love the game, but it is essentially boring to watch. I thought Tin Cup was pretty good, up until the Kevin Costner character made a complete ass of himself. No one, no one, is so stupid as to do what he did, in the US Open of all places! Same thing with pool, my first love. With the exception of The Hustler, and to a much lesser extent, Color of Money, there has never been anything decent filmed about pool, even as a small side scene.
Billy the Kid
bmodica,
this is from the trivia page of Tin Cup...
"The scene at the end of the movie where Kevin Costner hits the shot into the water hazard again and again was based on an actual event. Gary McCord the commentator with the handlebar mustache in the movie is an actual commentator and former pro. In a tournament he had a similar shot to Costner's. He needed a birdie to win and went for it. He shot over and over again and finally got it in 15 strokes. In the movie Costner gets it in 12."
it wasn't in the Open, but McCord, a very well known golfer and commentator did exactly what Cup did, but took it even further. Not unbelievable... its just that some people either have an ego they need to satisfy, or are just extremely determined and sure of their ability.
Hi, Guitar. I'm not convinced that Gary McCord actually did that; he's the class clown and I wouldn't be surprised if he made up the story. In any case, doing this in a small tournement, and maybe he was 20 strokes off the pace, is an entirely different situation than the leading pro in the US Open. It just wouldn't happen. As I said, I thought it was a decent movie up until that idiotic, "movie", moment. Only on the big screen. Typical Hollywood ending.
Billy the Kid
it's always funny when people confuse reality with stories.

I vote for Tin Cup as well. Those last scenes at the Open were done well. It was a good depiction of modern golf and what it would be like to compete at an event like that.
I dont know how you can be upset with the ending. If it was a typical hollywood ending he would have won. But it WAS a movie so some extra drama was needed. Plus the ending went with the theme of the whole movie.
A slacker "could've been" who never made it because his ego always got in the way of his game finally controls himself for 71 holes, to win over the girl. And in the end it was his ego and personality that got the girl anyway.
IMHO Bagger Vance is great too, but in more of a existential, "secrets of life" sort of way than as a golf movie.
We are the children of children, and we do as we are told - "Joe vs. The Volcano"
I would say Bobby Jones : Stroke of Genius was pretty good. Much golfing in it, and it follows Bobby Jones' career/life.
shareSomeone needs to make a gritty Harry Vardon Biopic, Daniel Craig as Harry?
bo ur ma!
I would have thought a Tiger Woods movie would be cool, but I doubt one will be out any time soon, unless it's a parody.
