Jack Lemmon

I just watched the DVD, twice and it was every bit as enjoyable second time around. One thing that puzzles me though is that there is no credit for Jack Lemmon - anywhere. If I'm not mistaken it was his last film before his death in June 2001. So why no credit as Hardy Greaves Snr and/or narrator?
I re-ran the closing credits just to see if I missed a later dedication - but nothing!
Can someone explain to me why ?

If you check the extended listing of cast on IMDB, you will see that Jack is listed as "old Hardy Greaves", uncredited. I believe he is listed as the narrator as well. Don't know why he is not credited. Could have been a union issue such as he took the job for little or no pay since it did have such a small budget. Trip Hamilton played Hardy's father.

it's not the first time that a narrator or a person who is crucial to the story but only has a small part isn't credited. i'm not sure if it has anything to do with payment issues as someone above said or it's supposed to make him stand out by not being credited (like sean connery in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves).

I never understood how a southern boy from Georgia grew up to sound like Jack Lemmon.

bushtony and his mother suffer from Congential Stupidty and they didn't see it coming.

Lemmon does do a touch of a southern accent.

Perhaps Hardy spent some time up north for a while.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

I live in VA and I don't think he has anything Southern about his accent. He's from Mass and I don't even think he even tried for an southern sounding accent.

Virginia isn't that southern. I know this is probably hard for you to hear, but somebody needs to say something to Virginia. Now if you were from, let's say SC or GA, then I'd see a point.

(and for the record, yes, I do live in VA.)

My mother & father were born & raised in Mississippi, and neither have a trace of southern accent.

Could be many things... the union, he may have been under contract for someone else and to do that you have to be uncredited, or pick another name with the actor's union, or I've seen actor's simply not want to be credited. Lemmon was well known enough most everyone knew who he was.

On a personal note, I think this is a fitting end to Lemmon's career. The scene at the end is kind of chilling knowing this was his last role before dying. Best thing he was ever in though was Grumpy Old Men.

Lemmon loved to golf. I also found it very fitting last role as he walked off to in the sunset.

Actually, there are several reasons why you might see a well known actor's role listed as "uncredited"...

1. The role is small (or a cameo), and having that actor listed in the cast might be misleading. For example... audiences paying to see Jack Lemmon in The Legend of Bagger Vance... would most likely be disappointed that he doesn't really play a big part in the movie.

2. It's an "independent film", and they don't want their notoriety to overshadow the film.

3. The actor may have been hanging around the set or they're friends with the director... and just did the "walk on" as a favor or a joke.

4. The actor may have been contractually obligated to appear in the movie, but doesn't want to be associated with the film.

He didn't want a credit from what I remember.

Sometimes it's for financial reasons and sometimes the actors don't want to be associated with a potentially bad movie. Many times actors do cameos and they are uncredited. I don't know what Jack Lemmon's reason for it was but sometimes big stars like that just appear in movies not expecting or wanting credit bc it is just something they may have done as a favor etc to the producer or director. He certainly wasn't hurting for fame or fortune at that point.

With Robert Redford as the management behind the film, I think we can be certain that Jack Lemmon's lack of a credit was Lemmon's decision, or at the least a mutual one. I think the explanation that Lemmon's character was predominantly a little boy, and Lemmon himself only appeared briefly at the start and the end of the film is the most logical explanation. As another person said, anyone watching knew it was Jack Lemmon. :-)

And yes, knowing Jack Lemmon's great love of golf, it always chokes me up knowing that this was his last film when he dies in the film. However, at least we know he's going to heaven, otherwise he'd have never been able to take his earthly golf clubs along with him. :-D
