Football question (spoilers)

I know the basic rules of the sport, enough to understand what went on, but I missed one part: in the last game, one and a half minutes left, they get a touchdown, but it is voided. They show some towel on the ground. What was that? Why wasn't it valid?

Thanks!

saw the movie a long time ago but i think it was cause an illegal grabbing by one of the fullbacks (ofensive), think of it as an offside if you like soccer

Its was offensive holding, as a blocker on offense you can only block sumo wrestler style, if you grab a defensice players jersey, it is a hold, it voids and offensive play that just happened and the team is penalized 10 yards. hope this helps.

"MadMan" was flagged for offensive holding. the "towel" you saw was a ref's penalty flag after he threw it. referees normally keep the flag tucked under/in their trouser's belt, belt loop, or pocket. when they witness an infraction, they grab it and throw it in the general direction of where the foul occured, where it lands on the field, which is the shot you see in the movie. The premise behind the foul and taking the touchdown away is that the play might not have developed into a touchdown if madman hadn't held, due to a quaterback sack or any other number of scenarios. lol, i broke it down, barney style.
