Amounts of money in American football...

I was surprised by some of the sums of money talked about in this movie. I'm more used to discussions about "soccer" but I know that if a player was as much of a legend as Shark was for a premiership soccer team, there is no way that he would risk death for $1,000,000 as he'd already be worth tens of millions.

Same goes for Cap Rooney. He's had 15 year career, and his wife is worrying about him retiring when he had another season in him? Why? He surely has more money than he knows what to do with.

And again for Al Pacino "pissing away all his money".

I'm sure there were others, but cant remember examples...

I didn't like Shark being so excited about $1M either - even in the late 90s, when this movie came out, a top-notch defensive player in the NFL should have been earning at least several million a year.

Today, the top players in the league make roughly $15-18M a year on average.

I really didn't get the business about Cap's family "needing" two more years' salary out of him, but top athletes and entertainers seem to go bankrupt all the time.

Maybe his wife wanted a 9-figure cushion before she'd consider herself set up for life.

I always felt that mrs Cap Rooney wanted to be the queen of the football wives and the center of attention at the functions. It seemed like she was holding court when they met Vanessa ( Willies girlfriend). When Cap retires, her status as the starting qbs wife retires also

I think a lot of players came from poor backgrounds and a bonus of any kind is worth it to them, regardless of the dollar amount and how much the player might be worth. Also, the idea of getting (winning) the bonus, regardless of the amount, would be a very strong motivator for someone who competes for a living.

Can't comment about soccer players, but American professional athletes go bankrupt every day, regardless of how much they earn.
