Willie Beamen or Coach D'Amato?

Obviously I'm referring to the scene where Coach lets Beamen know that he's starting Cap once he gets healthy. To me, this is one of the greatest scenes in cinema.

I find it hard to side completely with one person. With D'Amato, he's firmly right in believing that Beamen has to become a better leader on the field, not just a spectacular player. And I guess to some extent he's right in saying that Willie never accepts blame for wrongs of his doing (although I'd probably do the same thing in his position, taking money from a booster).

However, I fully agree with Beamen as well. Cap lost games, Willie brought the team back from the doldrums into the playoffs; he is clearly the hot hand. And Coach definitely seemed resistant to change that Willie clearly was, a new wave of quarterback that could beat you with his arm and feet.

Again it's hard to side completely with one person but I find myself agreeing slightly more with Beamen. Coach D'Amato definitely represented a drying breed of coach.

Anyway great scene by great actors.

Cap respected authority and saw the big picture, Beamen didn't, he went out there and did what he liked. The players wanted to play more for Cap than Beamen.

As a player you got to respect your coach. If Beamen just said "Yes coach, I'll try to focus more on the plays, you're calling", than I would be on his side. Instead he was a total d-bag about it. I'm with Coach D'amato on this one.

Coach, even Beamen realized he was right at the end.
