Three Seperate Occasions

According to Robert Mcnamara the USA faced nuclear war with the USSR three times, one of which I would assume is the Cuban missile crisis. I have no idea what the other two could be. Does anybody else?

reply

Definitely the Yom Kippur War, during Watergate (1973).

Probably the Six Day War (1967).
If not that, then perhaps RSM counted the Missile Crisis twice
(the blockade "blink" & the later "2nd letter" threat).

one of them was definitely in berlin 1961, when us and soviet military troops were basically eyeball to eyeball as the berlin wall was going up. just about the entire year was spent under the threat of nuclear war. i think berlin 61 was the closest we ever got to actually having to fight a nuclear war. cuba 62 was the second closest. but thats my opinion....

I agree. There are photos of Checkpoint Charlie during that 1961 crisis where the tanks on each side filled the street and were essentially nose to nose.

It always struck me that all it would have taken was some gunner losing his head and firing a shell to begin the end of civilization.

Possibly during the Suez Crisis in 1956.
