In the immediate aftermath he called it the worst defeat in US history.
"Morbius, something is approaching from the southwest. It is now quite close."
I shudder to think what may have happened had Kennedy done what LeMay suggested. It was discovered years later that not only were there more missles on the island than originally thought, but most were operational with ground commanders given control of each site. Amazingly, and thankfully, nobody hit the button.
