Joe Mantegna's Dean impression - wow
Did he get any Emmy recognition for the role?
shareGood question, I wondered this too. I just watched it tonight, and he was excellent in this role as Dino! The only problem with this film overall though, revolves around the lack of info about Dean Martin---even Davis & Lawford seemed to have more revealed about them, and they spent so much time with the Sinatra/Kennedy type stuff, that it became less of a "Rat Pack" film than a "Sinatra & Pals" film.
Dean Martin was a well-documented partier, 'ladies man' if you will, and known to raise hell....we saw almost none of that in this film. Thats a shame, because with Joe Mantegnas' awesome performance as Dean Martin in this film, it would have been great to see some of those well-told tales played out for us. Joe played him so well, Im sure he would have made it so we felt as if we had really watched it taking place!
In fact, I would love to see Joe Mantegna play Dean again, perhaps in a retrospective taking place in Deans later years looking back. I think it would be great, and Joe would be great for it.

I think you need to do some research about Dean Martin. He was not as you say a well documented partier and hell raiser. In fact he was just the opposite .., a loner. While the other boys partied till wee hours in the morning , Dean would retire to his room by 11pm to watch TV. Although he did enjoy his high balls, his drinking was exaggerated for his stage act. Sure, in todays politically correct world he would be considered an alcoholic. But in them days...he was a pretty normal drinker.
This is probably why they didnt show that aspect of him in this movie...cause it didnt exist. Do not confuse his or anyone else for that matter.. TV and Movie personalities with real life. Its like thinking someone who plays a Doctor in a Soap Opera is a Doctor in real life.
Joe was great as Dean Martin. He had Dino's independent streak down, loved the part where he warns Frank about being taken advantaged of ... Dean was the only one who had the balls to talk to Frank straight up ...
They showed that Deano drank apple juice on stage (as a whiskey substitute) and went home early to watch TV so it was quite accurate int that respect.
If that's what Deano did.
I also read a book said he was in rehab and they were free to move around, go for walks etc so Martin got a helicopter to fly in and meet him in the desert where he sniffed his way thru a bunch of coke then walked back into rehab on a regular occurance.
There was none of that in the HBO version.
