Why did the Father Keep Drinking the Money away??

He seems like an overall nice dude who is super attentive to his children. But every time he gets his hands of some cash (even for the new baby) his goes right to the pub. He never really explains his actions either when accused by his wife and kids. I thought he was a huge loser by the end of the film and my friend and me walked out of the theater before the movie ended because we were disgusted at his behavior.

I never read the book but it still seems like the director could have shed some more light on why the father was a selfish jerk.

Also Emily Watson has so many kids that we lost count. Ireland sure is a gross country, and there was no sense of community at all. Nobody seemed to care this family was poor, and when ever they tried to get the cute son to be an alter boy they had the door slammed in their face? What was this something similar to how they treat you if you want to be a Jew?

Beautiful music but unlikable characters.
