shareYou are right about that - resignation in lieu of prosecution. By the way, if I remember the movie, the general was convicted of covering up the rape, not the murder.
As a side note, it is unlikely they would have been able to convict on either the rape or the murder based on the evidence, unless some other high brass testified against him (highly unlikely).
In the movie the General was put on trial and found guilty for the crimes surrounding his daughters death, before and after it, but nobody says how many years he would have in the verdict.
