dumb question (spoiler)

I just watched this for the first time. In the scene where Brenner confronts the General in his office, and Folwer admits he thinks the General killed his own daughter, how does Brenner suddenly realize that it was Kent? There are a lot of flashbacks about Kent at that point and Brenner just gets it.

Is the purpose of the flashbacks to make us think, Oh, it's the last guy you would have expected?"

Or by piecing the flashbacks together, was there something else that I missed? Did he have another motive besides loving Elizabeth?

I think Fowler mentions that she was screwing everyone, Kent included. The knowledge that she'd been sleeping with Kent made Brenner think about some things Kent said and did. He knew she'd been strangled to death, for example, but hadn't examined the body. I admit it was a bit weak, though, the way he figured it out.

I think what made it that much weaker is that they spent the whole movie completely off the beaten track and then Fowler says one thing and the penny drops. Still enjoyable though.

I think there was more to it. For example, when Paul asked if Elisabeth was screwing some of the men there, Kent didn't say a word that he was one of them.. he just said "There were rumors." A bit odd thing to lie about.. yes he was married but this was a murder investigation. If you get busted on a lie, you get the top spot on the suspect list. Also, he remembered Kent took Elisabeth's keys so he had a way into her house to hit Paul with the shovel and get the tapes. Also, he seemed almost gleeful that Paul got attacked. Also when Paul asks him where he was when the murder happened he says "At home in bed.. when the tower called." which if you think about it, wasn't really an answer to where he was WHEN the murder happened.. it was like he trying to look like he answered but then added those last few words to make it more true.

That's not unusual. There are investigations all the time where they don't seem to be getting anywhere, perhaps for weeks, months or even years, then one word slips or one clue is found that breaks the whole thing wide open. It's not unusual at all.

Heck, watch Dateline...they've made a whole program out of it. LOL.

The plural of mouse is mice. The plural of goose is geese. Why is the plural of moose not meese?
