With all this talk of Chekov's Gun, what about the "strong safety"?

There's an interesting thread about whether the wallet was Chekov's Gun or a Deus Ex Machina, and I, for one think it is the former.

But what about that strong safety conversation between Hoyt and Roger? Those weren't just throwaway lines. What was the purpose of that? It doesn't add to the plot - we already think that Roger is cool. So if it's in there, it's gotta have a purpose, right?

A strong safety has gotta be fast - maybe even faster than a wide receiver. Where in the movie did we ever see Hoyt running at full tilt?

Or, is it a metaphor - that Hoyt was the last line of defense against Alonzo making the touchdown by getting away with everything. After all, no one else was going to stop Alonzo. The strong safety is the only one left to do it.

Any thoughts on this?

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

What about strong safety as he can be trusted by Alonzo being the new member of his crew?

Strong safeties are slow. They are sometimes linebacker size. Hence "strong." To make up for the relative lack of speed they drop way back deep to keep everything in front or the blitz for run coverage. Corners have to be as fast as wide receivers.

Jake was undersized and had to prove himself. Strong safety is a position that dishes out hits. Jake being as small as he was showed that as someone who played strong safety he wasn't a pushover.
