Smiley let Jake go, despite making a prior agreement with Alonzo; and obviously, that decision caused Alonzo's death.
But there was no guarantee that Jake would have stopped Alonzo; indeed, Alonzo almost beat Jake to death on the balcony.
If Alonzo survived, then wouldn't Smiley have been in trouble with Alonzo?
Yet Smiley didn't show concern about that potential problem.
I think it was more than proven that when push came to shove Alonzo wasn't the authority he liked to think he was. Roger clearly didn't fear him which is why Alonzo took him out after the robbery, he seemed subdued in front of the three wise men, Smiley didn't seem like he cared one way or the other and the guys in his girlfriend's hood turned on him.
As Roger said 'you're their bitch!' And that's all he was.

Nothing would have happened to Smiley. It was no secret to the street that Alonso had a hit on him. Smiley expressed this to Jake before he tried to escape. But it wouldn't matter to Alonso because like he told Jake it's not what you know it's what you can prove.
