Alonzo leaving Jake with the Hispanic gangsters was part of his test

He wasn't trying to get Jake killed, he was putting him through a test. He let that girl go at the beginning because he knew who she was. Had he arrested her, he couldn't have conducted the exercise. He knew the gangsters would find the wallet on Jake, and Jake would be able to get his way out of the situation. Perhaps it was to test his mental toughness more than anything. But he had that situation under control and knew that, while it would be uncomfortable, Jake was in no real danger.

Alonzo set Jake up. The Latinos were paid to kill him because he was witness to the murder of Rock and the stealing of the 4 million dollars. The whole day was a set up.

It may seem like it but that entire plot was actually meant to be a mistake on Alonzo's part.

He never knew that Hoyt found the girl's wallet because he had walked away before Hoyt picked it up.

No. Alzono wanted to dispose of Hoyt and prevent him from squeezing on him. The Latino gang was hired to kill him. Hoyt survived because he picked up the wallet and saved the gangsters' cousin.

In the scene after Alonzo blew away Roger and Hoyt goes outside to clear his head, you see Alonzo walk to the car, get in, all while he's having a convo on the phone. If you listen, you can hear Alonzo saying, "make sure that tub is clean" as he's getting in the car.

While it is definitely a move to kill Hoyt, it's also strange on Alonzos part. Even without him seeing the wallet he was present when the girl said exactly who she's with, the Hillside Boys or whatever. That's a specific gang Alonzo takes Hoyt to later the same day to get killed. How could he forget that affiliation? That chick could've been anywhere on that street when they walked in and gone "Oh sh!t that's the cop that saved me today". Even without the wallet that's an odd choice he made.

Then again they do a good job setting up the arrogance of the character. It's very possible that all occurred to him and he just thought "Nah I'm paying them, they'll do what I say" or "They won't give a sh!t".

Director commentary makes this more clear - Alonzo chose that gang as a sick joke. He thought it'd be poetic justice to have Jake killed by the same gang whose cousin Jake saved. In his arrogance, he never considered the possibility that Letty might actually save Jake, somehow (because he didn't see Jake take the wallet).

A test for... what exactly? Alonzo sure as hell knew this rookie wasn't dirty cop material, so why keep him around? Jake was extremely lucky he got out of that situation.

I had always wonder this. Was Alonzo intending to have Jake killed from the start or was it dependent upon how he reacted. I would imagine as a first day guy you would think it was all a test but once the murder was committed it was clear they were crooked. So, if Jake had been all about it and taken the $ would Alonzo have let him go?
