i just saw the film.

stunning to look at. intimate characters. engrossing storytelling.

james gray has talent. Oodels.

storywise it was a little thin and i think the ending with the inquiry was uneseccery. something admitted by the director. also, while it felt very much like the godfather and on the waterfront, i still loved that. it suited the subject and also james gray is someone who is influenced by the filmms that inspired coppola and scorsese. i think that's great. that's a strength in an age of film making that has lost touch with films ground breakers.

can't wait to see little odessa or anything else by him in the future.

the punch has punch( for a change).

This movie was very well done... it is what it is...

ALL the acting was great, this is a very character driven movie. Mark, Joaquin and Charlize all were fantastic, and believable in their roles. Evelyn, Fay and James, were also great.

It had it's suspenseful parts... etc. The only thing I wish is that Charlize wouldnt have died... I think the movie could of been just as powerful and delivered the same "ideals" with her not being killed off. But very good movie!

I haven't seen this flick and really wish you would have warned people of that ***SPOILER***.

I'm sure you meant no harm, maybe you can edit it for the benefit of others?

I appreciate your concerns and request, but I cannot change the whole beginning title.

I don't understand how someone would read all the way down on a 5-6 year old movie, and has not seen it? Why do people come on boards to movies and have not seen them? I'm not being rude, very sincere...maybe you can shed some lite on me.

Again, I understand the new movies out in the theater and just getting some input whether you want to see it or not. But a really old movie?

Thanks

Just investigating what I might want to rent. No biggie.

Also, I didn't mean the title of the thread was a spoiler, only mentioning that a character had died.

Again, not such a big deal. There are lots of movies out there that I never even heard of which may be worth seeing. Some are even older than me!

Basically, not everyone has seen every movie. Some people might not even have heard of this film (myself included) and might want to know slightly more about it by reading some posts. They usually start with the featured posts at the bottom of the initial page, which is how I got here. Others might have missed them even if they knew about their existence and were trying to decide their level of interest. It is for these reasons that video stores exist and carry more than just new releases.

Yes, it's true... some people really do want to see movies that aren't in the theater. In fact, more people rent and buy now than go see movies in the theater. Some of them really do check out older movies. And some of them do so out of knowing very little about the film. Personally I try to know as little about the details of a movie with only a basic grasp of the plot. Knowing what happens at the end is something that tends to mess that up a bit.

You may not have meant to have been rude, but you were... if you EVER reveal something that substantial about any movie (that being a main character dying at the end), you really need to put some notice about spoilers first or start a new thread that clearly indicates spoilers to warn people away if they have any interest in seeing it as a new work. It's just simple respect for the potential viewers and for the artists.

Insane, what a nice, eloquent reply. I myself only watch movies when they come out on Encore or Cinemax; I just saw this movie awhile ago and actually had never heard of it. I'm glad I didn't come to the boards and read about the ending or anything else that would've spoiled the movie for me. So, thank YOU so much for the respect you give others and for stating so on the board. I'm sure you're appreciated for posts like that more than you realize. Thanks!

You should have warned for spoilers. You gave away a major clou. And its an unwritten rule on IMDB to warn. Thanks for ruining it for me. And I was stupid enough to check IMDB before I start watchin it.

I agree, the actors are the only thing that held this movie, the script was atrocious. It was like watching them walk along a bridge, only no footing....horrible horrible horrible writing.

really great movie. maybe it was a little slow but overwhelming feeling of anxiety througout whole movie is impressing. totally underrated movie.

reply

I don't visit a board until I have seen the movie, new or old. Plotline and few comments ont the first page will do. And rating gives some indication.

Great acting in this movie, though Wahlberg was maybe too emotionless.

reply

Great actors, but this film was unbelievably boring. I literally dozed off halfway through, and when I woke up it was still the same scene after 20 minutes.

If you like 'The Yards' watch 'Little Odessa' by the same director, also starring tim roth and edward furlong: one of the most beautiful, intimate films I've ever seen; I watched it about 4 years ago and I'm still obsessed with it. Haunting, I think is the word. "I don't know what made you what you are... All I ask is that you leave Ruben alone. Even you must know there is nowhere you can go anymore... Joshua? Joshua?" Whoops! got carried away :p

reply

No matter how good the acting could possibly be, nothing could save this movie. It is just unbelievably boring to watch it, and to tell you the truth, it felt mostly like a waste of time.

reply

Are you one of those people that needs constant action in a movie without a plot? If not, then you should have enjoyed this movie. There was a lot of character development and then the corruption starts. The movie was very well done.

reply

Aaaah! Like a breath of sweet ocean air. Refreshing; very, very refreshing.

I have to disagree. With such a cast, I wondered how I'd never heard of this movie before. But having just watched it on HDNet Movies, I'm so thankful that I didn't waste good money on it in the theaters or as a rental! This movie is a perfect example of how a stellar cast alone does not automatically guarantee a great movie. The plot was thin and the pace was boring. I recommend skipping this movie and picking up ANY other title having any of the six main characters!
