Were Leo and Erica cousins or siblings, adopted siblings? SPOILERS

SPOILERS:

Okay, last chance, :) SPOILERS:

I couldn't figure it out, she called Frank dad once but later on I swear she said something like "You always acted like my dad" leading me to believe she was adopted. Anyway, Frank mentions "that time when [Leo and her] were 15 and were caught together".

Either way, they are related right, so that explains Willie's reaction when he beats Erica and says "That's sick, your sick" when he finds out their past relationship, but I still can't figure out the connection. Was it blood related? Imagined?

Leo and Erica were cousins because their mothers were sisters. Frank was Erica's stepfather, the second husband of her mother.

It’s just so sad that the variety of the world should be used as a contentious issue.

And, I might add, his role as their step-father seemed suspicious. This becomes evident near the end when Leo talks his cousin into going back inside to support his mother...just as he had done all these years. It seems to me the film maker was eluding to some shared history of Leo not having a father and his "uncle" not really being his uncle. My guess is that both Leo's father and Erica's father had died as a result of being "in the business."

As far as their relationship, it's definitely left pretty ambiguous, although as stated here, they were clearly cousins. Erica never disputes her mother's role as being her biological mother (she openly refutes Frank being her father), and Leo's mom and her mom are sisters == Leo and Erica are cousins.
