Residents disappearing (spoilers), relation to Stephen King's IT?

Alright so in the second episode with the newscaster in their dream talking about how, in Virginia, a town's entire population just disappeared with no trace. Then it was at least implied that it was because of mass suicide, which the residents of the island feared would then happen to them.
Does anyone remember from the book/movie "IT," the residents of Derry (over 200) disappeared without a trace also, at some point in the past? Not a whole lot of attention was brought to this, and it was never explained. Could it be related?

I was under the impression with a small group like that that IT might have ate them.

"I think I liked it better when I thought Sylar ate brains."

It's interesting because in IT, while talking about the Derry folks who disappeared, they also mention the same thing happening in Virginia.
