If you were in Ralphies position

If you happened to be in Ralphie’s position then (but let’s assume you are not a child unlike him so you can judge the whole situation better looking at it from the perspective of an adult or teenager at least, not a child) and you were to make a decision about going with Linoge as his apprentice, would you make this choice? If your answer is yes, why is it so – is it because of your desire to gain power and (almost) immortality or simply to save people from the island thanks to your sacrifice?

I'd go with Linoge. Because the alternative would be to spend the next ten/fifteen years of my life trapped on Little Tall island with a bunch of boring bastards. Linoge is charismatic and offers a life beyond the mundane. Keep the power, and keep the longevity; give me the wonder and the magic!

I wouldn't go with Linoge b/c Linoge was lying about destroying the island. And the island people weren't boring.

The island people were filled with secrets, banal and petty evil. A lot of King's stories are about the festering evil of secrets kept, working their poison in peoples' lives across the decades. Andre Linoge is not evil, per se; it is the wickedness of the folks of Little Tall Island that gives him the leverage he needs to get what he wants from them.

There's a number of King stories that involve Little Tall that gives one a good look into what they're like. The kindest one is the short story called The Reach.

From what is shown in the film, Linoge actually doesn't seem that bad considering he's a superman apparently above good and evil. I think I'd have to know more before I made the decision.

I hate to be a nitpicker, but the island in "The Reach" is Goat Island, not Little Tall.

That's about as silly as people who gleefully repeat that stupid "living deliciously" line from The Witch. In both cases, what they are "gaining" is nothing compared with what they are losing. Yes, Ralphie will be made "powerful" and "immortal". But he'll also lose his humanity, most likely his original personality, everything that made him Ralphie. It will be gone, replaced by what Lenoge wants him to be. A monster, who will go about using, hurting and killing people, for centuries. Some life.

Hell yes I'd go with him! I'd be an all powerful wizard like Harry Potter.

Seriously that would be awesome if you could get that kind of power and live nearly forever.

Well I would go with him just because he would be more interesting to hang out with. He acts evil but is really charming and clever.

If I was rational enough to understand that by me going the others would stay alive I would go for that reason, but I would have a hard time going because I'd really miss my parents.

Old thread but here goes. I guess Linoge isn't that bad if you don't mind a guy who terrorizes a community and forces people to kill themselves every once in a while.

Eh, I don't know.

On one hand; I'd be sparing decent people of certain death, since I'm sure not everyone in Little Tall had dark and horrible skeletons in their closet. This is also assuming that Linoge wasn't bluffing about causing the town to commit mass suicide if they didn't give him what he wanted. And hell, there's the perks (and curse) that comes with the powers and the possibility of being almost immortal.

On the other; if he was *beep* then it was all for nothing and a complete *beep* waste of time on everyone's part.
