I didn't expect that reaction... it was an intense scene, seeing that blood dripping form this head...

shareA good scene yes, but to answer your question I did suspect something of the sort. Not exactly like how it played out but two hostile men isolated out at sea and on a boat is always going to lead to something like that.
sharemost definitely did not - this was a rare case (for me at the time) of seeing a film based on Ebert's rating WITHOUT reading his review or anything else about the movie
for what it's worth, I later read the screenplay, and the description of what happens to Dickie's face IS ALL IN CAPS. So it was shocking by design.
