The Final Shot
The final shot in the film is so clever backing into the closest. It feels like a very extreem portrayal of not being able to be your true self in relation to your sexuality.

shareI had never looked at it that way. Thanks for posting that.
shareI think his sexuality was at the bottom of his list of issues.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Interesting but I always thought of it about Tom being stuck in the basement with no key to give to anyone. That and the all the mirrors converging on him. But I guess your makes sense.
shareI love the shot! I imagined him losing himself in all his various guises.
shareI always took it as Tom forever being alone with himself and his sins.
shareReading HIghsmith's books (she wrote numerous books in which Ripley is the main character) will elucidate much about the character; this film, for me, is a very pale representation of the character or the story of the first book (The Talented Mr. Ripley) - but, then most movies have a difficult time transferring books to the screen.
The Ripley books cover a period in Ripley's life of decades; unique about Highsmith's characters (same with Strangers on a Train) is having murderers get away with their crimes - in her books, not always in the film adaptations as Hollywood (as with Strangers on a Train) wouldn't allow the actual endings to be filmed) -
I high recommend reading the Ripley books - there's nothing quite like them in the genre.

Yes, he would have dumped Peter and his belongings overboard. It's ambiguous, but it would seem that no one knew Peter was on the boat. However, it's possible that there would be some official documentation of disembarking passengers and noting that one was missing.
shareMeredith knew Peter was there, she mentions him to Tom before they kiss on the boat. As he's sitting there he's finally totally stuck in the basement of his mind. I think his luck will have run out,but also maybe not. He should have been on his way to NY after getting away with a double murder and actually receiving more money from dicky's father. But instead chooses to go to Athens with Peter who has a concert there. Tom is just sitting there, fractured identity, totally tormented now that he's killed again, trying to think how is he going to get away this time, or does he even want to. It is plausible he could get away, but I think not after what he just went through .
